Code of Ethics
for an advocate of the rights of nature

Time is a witness to humans’ abuse of the bounty of creation. We are greedy and insatiable. Often we do not know when it is enough. Our unquenchable thirst for more has led us to a dying planet – a planet overflowing with trash, pollution and loss of life.

There is always time. And while it may be too late, we can still turn the tides. The Rights of Nature movement is an open, non-violent, collaborative and inclusive community with a strong commitment to a common goal – to recognize and uphold the rights of nature.

To ensure that we protect and grow nature’s remaining caretakers, anyone who would like to join the Rights of Nature Movement will have to commit to abide by its Code of Ethics. Solemnly swearing by the code will ensure that the principles and values of the movement are properly represented.

Code of Ethics for an advocate of the Rights of Nature

1.      Respect for Nature: I will recognize and respect the inherent value and rights of nature, independent of its usefulness to humans.

2.      Non-Violence: I will promote non-violent and peaceful methods of protecting and defending the rights of nature, and reject any form of violence, aggression, or destruction.

3.      Sustainability: I will work towards promoting sustainable practices that support the well-being of nature, as well as human communities that depend on it, in the long term.

4.      Collaboration: I will actively seek out and engage with individuals, communities, and organizations who share the same commitment to the Rights of Nature and work collaboratively towards achieving our shared and common goals.

5.      Transparency: I will conduct my advocacy work in an open, honest, and transparent manner, communicating clearly and truthfully about the issues I am working on and the solutions I am developing both conceptual and financial.

6.      Accountability: I will hold myself accountable for my actions, decisions, and commitments, and take responsibility for any harm caused by my actions or inaction. I will be open to feedback and continually ensure that my approaches are aligned with the movement.

7.      Continuous Learning: I will continuously educate myself on the principles and values of the Rights of Nature, as well as the environmental, social, and economic issues affecting nature and human communities. I will be open and share my learning with the movement and be open to learn from my fellows in the movement.

8.      Personal Integrity: I will act with integrity and uphold ethical standards in all aspects of my personal and professional work specifically in my advocacy work, including avoiding conflicts of interest, maintaining confidentiality, and treating all individuals with respect and dignity. I will practice the “Sapat Lifestyle” as a measure of my integrity and commitment, conscientiously measuring all aspects of my daily consumption to only be enough and not more.

I commit to this Code to uphold the principles and values of the Rights of Nature, and contribute towards a more just, sustainable, and equitable future for all beings on this planet.
